NAGRA
SN Mono Tape Recorder
Sub-miniature professional mono, tape recorder with
full or half-track recording options using cassette
width analogue tape. The NAGRA SN recorder,
in spite of its small size, produces exceptionally
high quality recordings. It is much appreciated by
reporters, who can record broadcast quality tapes
and, at the same time, be more mobile.
The SN
solves film-makers' synchronous sound recording
problems: it can easily be concealed during
filming and strict synchronization is guaranteed.
For scientific research, the SN can also
record data while on board a propelled craft.
Reels of narrow 1/8" (3.81 mm) tape are used, and
tape drive is by a slaved capstan motor. Rewind is
manual but rapid thanks to an overdrive system,
using a small folding crank handle. There are two
versions of the recorder:
NAGRA SNN
full-track recording, 3 3/4 and 1 7/8 in./sec.
(9.5 and 4.75 cm/s)
NAGRA SNS half-track recording, 1 7/8 and
15/16 in./sec. (4.75 and 2.38 cm/s)
The tape-deck
is milled from a solid piece of metal and the case
and lid are of drawn light metal alloy. All
electronic circuits are highly sophisticated and
include a voltage converter with variable ratio,
and an automatic level control. A special
miniature omnidirectional capacitor microphone can
be used and it is also possible to work with a
conventional dynamic microphone. A small meter
indicates the compression rate of the automatic
level control or the battery voltage. Headphones
can also serve as an output monitor (confidence
playback).

AATON
Cantar-X
Every detail of Cantar has been honed to
perfection to make the task of a location-recordist
as easy as possible, while providing the utmost
flexibility.
The five mics, four lines analog rotary faders as
well as the six linear track faders are positioned
on the upper surface of the machine in such a way
that operator's hand rests on them in a perfectly
natural position, allowing convenient control of the
knobs, whether the recorder is on the shoulder strap
or on the cart. With its twelve-degree slanted upper
surface, Cantar is as easy to use as a studio
mixing console.
Another practical consideration: the faders as well
as the limiter and filter actuators still are at
operator's fingertips when Cantar is inside a
carrying pouch holding four RF mike receivers.
Cantar's three circular read-outs and
alphanumeric panel constitute the largest control
surface of any known portable recorder; all
fundamental operational parameters are plainly
visible at a glance. The display panel can be
swiveled to provide the optimal viewing angle for
the operator.
Specifications:
230 x 310 x 80 mm (9 x 12 x 3.2") 7.5 lbs.
AATON
Cantar-X Accessories
The Cantar
built-in CD/DVD+R burner is not a quickly added
afterthought on top of an existing design. It is
built within the recorder structure, nested behind
the swivelling front panel.
Well protected against rain and dust winds in which
Aaton machines -recorders and cameras- must survive,
it nevertheless remains instantly
interchangeable,(like on a laptop) if something goes
wrong with the burner mechanics.
No single media today can match the pervasiveness of
CD-Rs / DVDs as a means to carry audio files into
any computer on earth. They are so inexpensive that
there is no reason not to burn a two track mixdown
for the telecine transfer and the Avid or FCP room
at the end of the day, and some others for the final
mix suite later.
FireWire.
Truly hot-plug and bi-directional, FireWire allows
Cantar to record audio files simultaneously on the
internal hard-drive and on an external disk. No more
time wasted in post-mirroring. Through FireWire
also, Cantar can burn the day's two-track mixdown
onto standalone CDR/DVD+R.
With the bi-directionality of FireWire, the internal
hard disk is directly accessible from a Mac/PC
desktop to install software updates, to make audio
file copies for transmission to a server, to load
pre-recorded sounds to be played back during
recording - a quite useful feature for music videos
and natural looking phone conversations.
Bluetooth.
This RF system allows a PDA to remote-control all
Cantar functions, displays and configurations. Scene
&
Take ID plus various metadata can be entered from
the PDA. Bluetooth can also be used for wireless
connection to an external eight track console or a
simple keyboard.
Given the software controlled structure of Cantar,
the PDA is a very convenient way for sound mixers to
store all their custom configurations so as to
recall them at any time, even on another machine.
Rent a Cantar, push 'Config Upload,' and you are in
front of a machine which is exactly configured like
yours. |

FOSTEX
PD-6 DVD Location Recorder
When Fostex embarked on the process to design a
successor to the industry standard PD-2 and PD-4
portable timecode DAT machines, they knew they had
set themselves no easy task. Having invented both
timecode and portable timecode DAT, Fostex location
recorders had become, and still are, the most widely
used and respected DAT machines for film &
television sound production around the world,
helping their users earn respect, gain work and to
win many coveted international awards.
That’s why they knew it was important to follow the
design and philosophy processes that had made their
previous machines the first choice of sound mixing
professionals. Namely, to prove the technology in a
stationary, stand-alone format and obtain
comprehensive & wide-ranging user-feedback prior to
taking it out into the field.
Every aspect was looked at and offered up for
evaluation; the recording media, the functionality
of the mixer, the interfacing connections, the
timecode implementation and, of course, the user
interface. |

FOSTEX
DV-40 Master Recorder
The Fostex DV40 Master Recorder is designed
to record and playback audio data directly onto a
DVD-RAM disc. The unit offers high reliability
recording by employing a Verify/Write mode, which
examines all recording data, all the time, while in
the record mode.
The DV40 employs the UDF file format mode
that establishes file compatibility between Computer
based Work Stations. The user can choose either SDII
or BWF (.WAV) as the desired audio file format and
also choose either 24 bit or 16 bit resolution.
Recording track modes can be selected from MONO,
STEREO, or MULTI (4track). Various sampling
frequencies can be chosen: 44.1 / 48 / 88.2 / 96 /
176.4 / 192kHz*.
The DV40 offers internal file conversion
between 4track or STEREO files and Multitrack mono
files. File editing modes offer non-destructive edit
functions such as Copy, Paste, Insert, Cut and
Erase.
You can choose between 2 recording modes: “New file”
and “Insert”. The recorded data in the Insert mode
offers Time Jump, UNDO functions supported by time
and date. The other mode available is Tape mode
(destructive mode), which offers data security for
accidental power cut, i.e., previous recording is
secured up to the point where power loss occurs. For
back up and archiving a Disc duplicate mode is
available by installing an optional HD, while Audio
file duplicate modes are possible on board (no hard
drive necessary.) |

FOSTEX
D-15 Professional Timecode DAT
Based on technology first seen in the market leading
D-10, the D-15 features 8 Mbit of DRAM
on-card to provide instant start, ‘RAM scrub’ and
‘RAM repeat’ with 1 ms accuracy for precision cueing
with advanced jog/shuttle techniques.
In addition, this facility has been utilized to
provide the simulated ‘vari-speed’ required to
enable a linear DAT transport to perform the chase
synchronisation offered when the optional 8335
timecode expansion card is fitted.
The 8335 card enables the D-15 to playback
and assemble record externally generated timecode,
as with the D-10, which is essential for, say,
‘spinning in’ timecoded audio program material to a
digital audio editing system. Furthermore, the 8335
card brings the D-15's new chase mode into
its own by synchronising to external LTC when
playing back with the option of referencing to
external Word, Video and AES/EBU.
Fostex's reputation for ergonomic design is enhanced
in the D-15's clear and concise front panel
which features a large multi-function fluorescent
display with 7 modes (5 different time scales plus
‘non-hold’ and ‘permanent’) of peak metering, soft
touch illuminated transport keys, a large
jog/shuttle wheel and the logical layout other
buttons and switches.
The D-15 is equipped with a full compliment
of all standard audio interfaces such as balanced
+4dBu XLR I/Os and -10dBV RCA connectors as well as
standards not often implemented on a machine in this
class. AES/EBU and optical S/P-DIF are provided
along with a 37-pin parallel interface for
connection to cabled remote controls. Also a General
Purpose Interface (GPI) is present - useful for
remote and fader starts plus S-ID location - while
the optional 8336 RS-422 card allows control of the
machine via 9-pin protocol.
With such a comprehensive feature-set from a company
with an unrivalled DAT pedigree, the D-15 is
the perfect solutions machine. |

HHB
Portadrive PDR 2000 Recorder
Location audio acquisition in the 21st Century is
about much more than just 2-channel recording. The
modern sound recordist must be able to capture
pristine sound from multiple microphone sources onto
a durable, high-capacity medium, and produce those
recordings on demand in a post-friendly format. And
with a director's mix to organise and daily rushes
to provide, the demands placed upon the sound
recordist have never been greater.
That's why location sound specialists HHB developed
the PORTADRIVE PDR 2000, a 'next generation'
location recorder which combines 24-bit/96kHz
multichannel recording on a rugged, removable HDD
with simultaneous recording to an external device
such as the optional PDRDVDBU DVD-RAM back-up unit,

NAGRA
ARES-C Digital Recorder
Portable battery powered two-channel solid digital
recorder/editor, using PCMCIA Flash memory card
technology.
The ARES-C is a 16 bit solid state audio
recorder/player using PC FLASH Memory Cards (PCMCIA)
as its storage medium.
The information is stored using the MPEG-2 (Mono or
Stereo), G722, u-law, A-law compression standards
and can be optionally equipped with either an
on-board ISDN CODEC allowing direct connection to
the ISDN network, or a fully featured SMPTE/EBU time
code synchronizer. Recorded material can be
internally edited and copied between cards with an
easy to use, non-destructive editor which is a
standard feature. Weighing less than 6 1/2 lbs., the
ARES-C packs a powerhouse of features into a small
package. With no moving parts, this solid state
recorder is impervious to shock and vibration. And
with all these advantages, it is still a NAGRA with
proven reliability even in the harshest
environmental extremes.
The front panel, metallic chassis, and features of
the ARES-C were all designed using the
experience of previous NAGRA recorders. This renders
the ARES-C easy to operate and assures
performance in temperatures from -5 degrees to +140
degrees Fahrenheit. It is powered by standard "D"
cells, available worldwide, or rechargeable Ni-Cd
sticks. Continuous operation is assured with the
available AC charger, Still, 8 hours of operation
can be obtained from batteries alone. Equipped with
switchable phantom powered microphone
pre-amplifiers, built-in monitoring speaker and
headphone amplifier and programmable Automatic Level
Control, the ARES-C bears a resemblance to its NAGRA
predecessors.
Two auxiliary inputs, which can be mixed together
with microphone inputs, as well as an input for
signals treated with external noise reduction are
available through the EXTENSION connection. Also
available on this connector is the input for
external clock sources. Two balanced line level
outputs, one AES digital output and even a 600 ohm
transformer coupled bi-directional telephone
connection are standard on the ARES-C.
Designed as an over-the-shoulder recorder, all
control and monitoring of input and output levels,
operating modes and even menu function programming
is available from the front panel. A set of software
menus allows a simple configuration of the machine
for all modes of operation providing flexibility to
adapt to any situation. Four templates are available
to store and instantly recall setups making field
operation simple for even occasional users. |
